The Four Values of HungerFree

All Values

Ending world hunger is no small task. In fact, many might call it an impossible one.

We respectfully disagree.

Belief drives behavior. Whatever you believe motivates your actions and gives you the determination and perseverance to achieve whatever you decide to do – in this case, ending hunger one community at a time. Behind the HungerFree movement are four core values that motivate us to do what some might call an impossible job.

Values_Foodfood

We believe everyone deserves enough food for today and tomorrow.

Simply put, we think people deserve to eat and know where their next meal is coming from. Food assistance is life-saving in certain situations but alone is not a comprehensive solution to ending hunger. While we provide food in the short-term to address people’s immediate hunger, we help people develop ways to feed themselves and their communities for a lifetime.

Values_Empowermentempowerment

We believe in methods that empower communities to become self-sufficient over the long term.

Empowerment waters the seeds of dignity planted within each of us. Just like the weather conditions must be favourable for crops to flourish, so must the conditions be favourable for a person’s full potential to be realized. Our methods will always aim to empower individuals and communities to be self-sufficient by providing the training, resources and tools to develop skills to cultivate their own assets, generate their own income and grow or purchase their own food. We’re not here to save anyone; we only want to create the conditions necessary for self-sustainability.

Values_Youthyoung people

We believe young people have the power to transform the future through their potential and creativity.

There are more young people in the world today than ever before. This generation will shape the future, yet many lack the economic opportunity to be successful despite being full of untapped ideas, passion, energy and creativity. Young people have always been at the forefront of change. By investing in this generation, we unlock their full potential to break the cycles of poverty and free their communities from hunger and insecurity once and for all.

Values_Communitycommunity

We believe community thrives when we gather together to share from our abundance and meet each other’s needs.

At the heart of mealtime is the table, a place we gather to share not only in the nourishment of our bodies, but also of our souls. Community is reciprocal by nature – we need others and others need us – so we gather in order to give and to receive from the abundance we’ve been given. We believe in a local and global community that works together to support others.

These four values are the pillars of the HungerFree movement and the reason we believe a hunger-free world is possible. What about you? What do you believe in? Do any of these values resonate with you?
